Online Poker Will Kill Maryland Lottery(?)
We all know for a fact that there are some bloody stupid people in politics these days. What amazes us is how on earth they get voted in. Obviously they get the votes of even more bloody stupid people; the USA is a big country and they certainly have their fair share of these. Now the latest in a long line of fools is also having his say with regards to online poker in the USA.
The Governor of Maryland has actually got the temerity to not only suggest that the legalization of online poker at Federal level will kill their lottery, he actually makes this sound like a statement of fact. First, the lottery is a completely random number game, there is no skill to playing it, any idiot can play, and millions of vulnerable people in the USA are exposed, and in fact encouraged to play this mugs game which offers virtually no chance of winning.
Online poker on the other hand is an absolute game of skill, and while any poker player can buy a lottery ticket the same cannot be said – that any lottery gambler, can play a game of online poker. These two worlds just don’t meet. It’s like saying that offering chess lessons to school children will do away with tiddlywinks playing skills.
Martin O’Malley – this is the Maryland Governor – has actually requested that Congress negates proposed bills to legalize online poker, on the basis of his lottery argument. That poker will kill it. In the meantime the Congressional ‘supercommittee’ is searching for any ways and means to find revenue to trim something like $1.5 trillion in federal debt. It is actually (insert swear word…) madness! Online poker, online gambling and the potential revenue these activities can generate, does not diminish the revenue that the vulnerable portion of the population spends on lottery tickets. The man is not stupid, he is insane!
